Natale in Italia (Christmas in Italy)!

To get everyone excited for Christmas, here's some photos from the holiday season in Lecco!

Okay these first pictures are actually from Milan at our friends Sarah and Alessandro's apartment, but they are still holiday related so I figured you would let it slide.  We went over to Sarah and Alessandro's to celebrate Thanksgiving (Sarah's American, Alessandro's Italian) and to make the closest approximation to the traditional American dishes as we could!

Ale working hard on the dressing.
I learned that its called stuffing when its cooked in the turkey, and dressing when its cooked outside the turkey.
Our lovely hosts!
Our turkey (breasts) cooking in the oven.
The thrown together stuffing, which turned out surprising well.
The boys are ready to eat!  (L-R) Alessandro, Cody, and Derrick.  Cody's another American working for Cameron at Derrick's plant and he arrived here about a month ago.
I should have taken more Thanksgiving pictures.  We ended up with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce (we had brought a can back with us from when we were in Texas to get our  visas), and pumpkin pie.  Sarah actually made the pumpkin pie out of real pumpkin (no canned pumpkin in Italy!) which I found to be mind boggling.

Okay, onward to pictures of Lecco!  They've put up these pretty lights all over town, which have been doing a good job of motivating me to get out and do some Christmas shopping =-)

Piazza XX Settembre
Really cute restaurant decorated for the season!

Why would Santa need reindeer when he's got his own dog sledding team?
Viale Turati.  By our house!
Derrick and Cody getting into the holiday season the only way they know how:
green Santa hats and Irish beer.
Our Christmas Tree (albero di Natale)!
And last but not least, the city of Lecco has brought us snow, snow and more snow.  We have high hopes that we'll be able to do our first skiing of the season this weekend.

Next on my list of to do's: buy water proof shoes =-) .  Merry Christmas everyone!

Andiamo a Roma! (08/10 - 08/12/12)

This summer we had the pleasure of hosting Derrick's cousins Candice and LaChelle on their first trip to Italy.  During their visit, thanks to the cheapness of Ryanair plane tickets ($50 round trip!), we were all able to enjoy a long weekend in Rome.  The girls and I flew down first thing Friday morning, to make the most of our time, and then Derrick was able to join us by flying down Friday evening after work.

One of the really cool things we were able to do during our girls' day on Friday was take a special tour of the excavations underneath St. Peter's Basilica.  The tour showed us the different layers of the previous cathedrals under the current St. Peter's, as well as where the possible remains of St. Peter were discovered.  Our tour group was really small, probably 10 people, and we had to go through all these different check points to get in.  We really felt like we were getting a behind the scenes view of St. Peter's, because there were no other tourist in this part of the Vatican.

Usually you do not get all this space to yourself at the Vatican
We weren't allowed to take pictures during the excavation tour, but we made up for that by taking lots of pictures afterwards when we went into St. Peter's itself.

We are wearing our Vatican approved attire....
Which we promptly removed when back out in the heat!
August is not the optimal time to visit Rome.  The heat was pretty intense, even for us Houstonians who claim to know a thing or two about heat and humidity.
After St. Peter's we continued the Vatican theme by heading over to the Vatican museum.  There are paths through the museum that can take up to 5 hours, but we were all pretty worn out by this time so we took the express track and limited our museum tour to about an hour and a half.

That evening we headed over to the Trevi fountain to make some wishes, eat gelato, and enjoy the cooler evening weather!

Making their wishes!
While we were here this random guy kept following Candice around  and repeatedly saying "I love you".  Still haven't decided if it was cute or creepy.
Saturday morning our first stop was the Colosseum   There we met up with some Cameron friends who were making a pit stop in Rome before heading back to the US from an assignment in Romanian.

Cousins at the Colosseum

After the Colosseum it was just a short walk across the street to the remains of the old Roman circus and forum.
The cousins and Candice and Jay (Cameron friends) in front of the Roman Circus.

That afternoon we walked around Rome taking in more of the historic sights and even doing a little shopping.  I bought a really cute dress while we were there which I promptly ruined after wearing once by failing to translate the words "lava secco" (wash dry).  I guess that means we'll just have to take another trip to Rome so I can buy another one ;-) .  It sounds like my cousins will be making the trek to Rome this coming summer, so that sounds like a pretty good excuse to me!

Sunday morning we wanted to get in a few remaining sights before we had to catch our flight back to Milan.  First stop was the Castel Sant'Angelo.  We didn't actually go in the castle, but we enjoyed walking around the grounds and eating kebabs on the lawn.

We made one last pass by St. Peter's Basilica and then headed to our last stop of the trip, the ruins of the Roman baths.

Remains of the Roman Baths

The remains of the baths were huge, but it was a little heard to visualize what they once looked like so here's a picture of help you out.

Even though the weather couldn't have been hotter, we had a really excellent trip to Rome (and the heat gave us a good excuse to eat lots of gelato!).  It was fun seeing the girls experience Rome for the first time, and I really enjoyed getting to share that adventure with them!

Romeo e Julietta (07/21 - 07/22/2012)

We took at little weekend trip to the city of Romeo and Juliet, Verona, with Derrick's mom and our friends Fabiana and Augusto.  Apparently some sort of tornado had gone through Verona Friday night, but when we arrived on Saturday morning the weather was gorgeous.

See what I'm talking about with the gorgeous weather.
One of the reasons we went to Verona, is that they have an old Roman stadium, very much like a mini Colosseum, and during the summer they still perform shows there.  Of course we thought it would be perfect to watch a performance of Romeo and Juliet in the city where it all took place (well theoretically took place)!

The mini Colosseum =-)
The even had an old house where you could see what might have been Juliet's balcony.

"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?"
People attach locks to this gate as a promise of eternal love

You are also suppose to rub the right boob on this statue for good luck.  We did not participate in this particular tradition.

They had a beautiful piazza with restaurants, shops, and vendors with booths selling souvenirs.

Derrick immediately noticed something else going on in this square....

That's right, even in Italy they're sawing those horns off, lol

They also had a very nice cathedral in Verona where we poked our heads in for a little bit, and listened to a few minutes of an Italian mass.

We also paid a visit to the "Tomb of Juliet".  Again this is theoretical, in Verona you just have to go along with the fun and let your imagination guide a bit.

The Adige river runs through Verona.  Across the river there is a castle and also ruins of a roman theater where they still do live performances.  Verona is an excellent town to visit if you enjoy live shows.  It also has good shopping, interesting architecture, nice restaurants.... overall its probably one of my favorite places we've visited so far.

Roman Theater

In the evening we headed back to the stadium for our show, Romeo e Julietta!

The show we were seeing was an opera, and it ending up being a bit more modern than we expected.  It also ending up being in French! So unfortunately our Italian friends couldn't help translate for us.

I don't remember the bat mobile being in Romeo & Juliet....

Since the stadium is outdoors you can run into some complications with the weather.  Unfortunately about halfway through the show it started raining.  We waited around for a while hoping it would clear up, but they ending up having to cancel the rest of the performance.  Hopefully we'll be able to go back next summer, and actually see a whole show!
